Cherelle | 24 | Birmingham, England | Retail

I decided to Come Out on the eve of my 18th birthday because my mom couldn't understand why I wouldn't go on a date with a lad she worked with.

My mom was very confused and couldn't understand what I was saying.  I told her I was with a girl called Sarah who I had been with for five months and I wanted her to be there for my 18th birthday party.  All Mom did was cry and she kept asking why?  Why don't I try dating a guy? She just didn't understand!  I left her upset and went to my room.  When my dad finished work he found her in a bit of a state crying and she wouldn't speak to him so he came to me to find out what had happened.  I explained to him and he told me I was just confused and being curious.  He said that I must finish with my partner and never see her again, for my mom's sake.

"My 18th birthday was horrible.
I spent it trying to put on a happy face when deep down I was crying on the inside."

You could still see my mom was upset, she stayed clear of me all night.  A few months later I moved out of my family home and got my own place.  It was then that I started being more open about my sexuality; my sexuality that I had been hiding for so long.  I went to gay nightclubs and spoke to other lesbian women online.  At 19 I met Morgan, my current partner, who later moved in with me.
I explained to my parents that we were together and that I was 100% certain that I was a lesbian, whether they liked it or not.  Morgan and I had a few ups had downs with my parents trying to split us up but I stayed strong and stuck by her; she helped me all the way.  By my 20th birthday the whole family had come to accept me for who I was :-)  I'm now 24 and me and Morgan have a beautiful 10 month old little boy and are to be married next February.  Also me and my mom have a relationship again and she loves her grandson to bits!
